The solution to :        King's Quest IV
                         ***************

------------------------------------------------------------------------
You start on a beach disguised as a simple peasant girl.  From here
explore a bit and make a full map of the area.  It's not hard only a
five by six or so land area.  I am assuming you have this done so I
don't have to waste time giving you directions and so you can get to
the part you're having problems with.

Quest One: The Magical Fruit

Head over to the Dwarf's house.  On the way you should come across a
stone bridge (great artwork, Sierra).  Walk around the edge and LOOK
UNDER BRIDGE.  Ah!  A golden ball!  Well, you probably know what with
this.  Head off to that pond and the frog and "accidently" drop the
ball in.  After the frog dutifully retrieves, pick the dude up and
plant one on him.  After he leaves you, and you have the crown
continue off to the dwarfs' house.  Once inside, give it a good once
over, clean it up and wait till you have company.  After the little
guys leave, clean up the table again.  Looks like one of em left a bag
of diamonds for you!  Well you don't want to take advantage of the
situation so head south to the mine and enter.  Offer them to the guy
deep in the mine standing by the lamp.  Wow!  Looks like you get both
the lamp AND the diamonds!

Leave the mine and go to the haunted house (it's not haunted now, but
wait til later!)  Go inside and take a left into the living room.  On
one of the bookshelves there is a book on Shakespeare.  Pick it up and
leave.  Eventually in your travels you'll come across a minstrell
either sitting on a stump or a rock near the ocean or in a meadow.
When you find him, give him the book and he'll thankfully give up the
lute.  Now you have something to bargain with!  Walk around some more
until you see Pan and play that lute to get his attention.  Give the
lute and you'll get the flute!

Now it's time to head off for this fruit!  Go to the waterfall and put
on the crown you received from the frog-prince.  Pick up the board
here by the entrance of the cave and save the game.  Enter the cave
and wait a few minutes.  If you don't here the troll coming, light the
lamp and continue.  Whenever you see the troll you might as well
restore back to the last place unless you think you can make it
running away (very hard).  Each time you make it into a room and the
troll doesn't appear after a few seconds save the game.  Work you way
south from the first room and find a passage east from twice.  You
should now see a light at the end of the tunnel, really!  Edge your
way to the center of the room until you see some ridges in the light.
This is a chasm.  Try to put your board down across it.  If you can't
move a little more to the right and try again until you get it.  Then
walk directly to the right until you make it across.  Now, you
obviously have to go north and then out the tunnel.

Here at the swamp is a good place to save again.  Now manuever your
way to the edge and JUMP from sod to sod until you get to the island
(type JUMP and press ENTER each time, it's as easy as that!)  Once you
get there, play the flute to immobilize the snake and grab the fruit.
You did it!  Now jump back to the main land and follow the same
directions back through the cave (don't forget the chasm!)  Oh, and on
your way back through get that bone by the exit...

Now we have to get that talisman and get back to father!  So you
bravely head up the mountain path and... get good-napped!  Well, after
waiting in your cell for a while you are brought back and given a
chance to "prove" yourself by Lolotte.  Thank God for Edgars, hope
that complexion clears up buddy.

Quest Two:  The Unicorn

After being brought down from the mountain it seems you have to catch
that unicorn you saw in the forest and return it.  First we need some
bait.  Why?  Well that's kind of hard to explain so let's just do it.
Some where around the mine you'll see a bird tugging at a worm in the
soil.  Get the worm and head off towards the fisherman's dock.  Try
talking to the guy, but no go...  Follow him into the house and see
what's eating him.  Seems to be having some finacial problems, the
stock must be down again.  Well, you need that pole bad so give him
the pouch of diamonds and you'll get the pole.  Head back to the edge
of the pier, bait the hook and cast!  Wow!  You now have a dead fish!
Neato!  Hold your breath and remember it's for your pop!

Here's a good place to save.  Dive into the ocean and head west from
the pier.  If you hit a shark restore and try again.  Keep going west
until you hit Genesta's island.  Walk around the island until you find
a peacock feather and pick it up (don't ask).  You can drop in and
visit Genesta if you like.  Another good scene is to swim south of the
front of the island, really nice bright art.

Enough of the tour, head back to the mainland and save while on the
beach.  Swim out one screen and wait around until a whale appears.  If
he doesn't try again until you get him.  After you're swallowed by
Monstro, check out your surroundings.  For a good laugh read the note
in the bottle (ok, not-so-good laugh)  Well this smell is getting to
you and you better get out of here (another good place to save).  Go
to the upper right of the stomach and slowly start to climb diagonally
up Monstro's tongue until your standing up, then move closer to the
guy's hangey-ball.  Now whap it good with that feather until you're
sneezed out!

Back in the water again, but there's something different, like that
sinister island to the north.  Well let's go check it out!  Now here's
the real fun part let's play "see if I can get the parser to
understand me"!  Try looking at boat. No good.  Try searching boat.
No good. Ok, try swimming around and diving.  No good.  Well, let's
get REAL ingenuitive (new word) and walk inside the boat and LOOK AT
GROUND.  You'd think that would be covered in SEARCH BOAT but not
here!  Now that you have the precious golden-bridle, lets get off this
sand-bar.  Toss that dead fish over the pelican's way (if he flew,
leave the screen and come back again).  Pick up the silver whistle and
give a little whistle, Jiminy Cricket style.  Hop on the dolphin and
you're off to the mainland!

Now all we have to do is find a way to tame the unicorn so we can
deliver.  If you were at the roman bath earlier, keep going until
little cupid comes for a dip.  Scare him off and get the trusty bow
and arrow.  Now you have a means for taming the unicorn, track him
down and shoot him (you know what I mean).  Slip the bridle on and
trot off to Lolotte's castle.

Well it seems that didn't work at all, now we have to find a god
forsaken chicken that lays golden eggs (thought that was a goose...
probably his cousin).

Quest Three: Magic Chicken who lays Golden Eggs (neato)

Head off to the ogre's hut and make sure he isn't around then open the
door and enter.  Quickly feed the bone to the dog (you did pick that
up on you're way out the cave didn't you?)  Again, Quickly get up
those stairs, grab the axe and hurry back down and hide in the closet.
Wait until the ogre comes home, asks for the chicken and falls asleep.
Quietly open the door and get the chicken.  Edge your way toward the
door and keep typing OPEN DOOR until you get it.  You want to get out
as fast as you can without waking the ogre.  If the chicken manages to
do that for you, just keep on boogiein' or restore.

Well head back to Lolotte's place again.  You should know what to
expect by now, another "quest" (well, that's the name of the game,
even if you aren't a king...)  This one's a little more "scarier" than
usual.  You have to find Pandora's box, the embodiment of evil and
return it to Lolotte so she can unleash this power on the world, but
hey!  You're doing it for you father right?  (oh boy!)

Quest Four:  Pandora's Box

Now here's where we get to find out what's beyond that spooky forest!
Enter one of the haunted wood areas and swing that axe around you
picked up at the ogre's place.  After that you can freely pass through
with out being harmed.  After passing through you should find a big
cave in the shape of the skull.  Inside are the three hags from greek
mythology, who share the One Eye.  Once you enter, save the game
incase you screw up.  Wait until the hag gets pass the bot then walk
around the pot the other way, so the pot is between you and the hag.
Now walk closer (but not TOO close!) to the two hags sharing the eye.
Get in front of them and while they're passing the eye, TAKE EYE.
Without their eye they are helpless.  Leave the cave and come back in.
When you re-enter they will toss you a obsidian scarab which will ward
off the undead (gettin' spooky here!)  Take the scarab and toss them
their eye and get out of this place.  Once you leave the forest, night
should envelope you.

The scenery from here on is equally beautiful (I especially enjoyed
the screen north of the fisherman's shanty)  Now we really get to have
some fun and visit the haunted house!  After you get in side you'll
here some crying from upstairs.  Evidently the "baby" wants something.
So your going to have to go gravedigging, but first you need a shovel.
Go down to the living room and look at the picture.  Now examine the
wall and flip the hidden switch.  Walk inside and get the shovel.
Leave the upstairs for later.  Now go outside and head to the
graveyard to the west.  In the upper left hand corner there is a
gravestone where a baby was buried.  Dig here and get the rattle.
Bring it back and put it in the babies crib.

Next you'll here the rattling if chains.  Downstairs there will be a
miser looking for something.  Find the gravestone which tells about
the miser (to the west) and dig.  Return the coins.  The third ghost
should be a girl upstairs in the small bedroom.  You need to dig up
her locket (to the east) and return it.  The fourth ghost is a
swashbuckling hero, find his stone and dig up the medal of honor he's
looking for and return it (to the west).  The final ghost will be a
mischeivious young boy.  Follow him up to the trap door in the
ceiling.  Needless to say, you need to get in that trunk so go off to
the boys grave to the east and dig.  Return his toy horse and that's
the last of the ghosts!

Open the trunk and inside you'll find a sheet of music.  Take the
music up to the organ room (up the stairs beyond the secret room) and
play the music.  When you're done a little door will open revealing a
key.  This key is what we need to get Pandora's box.  Go to the
eastern graveyard and unlock the crypt and enter.  Toss the rope
ladder down and climb.  Don't worry about the mummy, just some extra
scenery as long as you have the scarab.  Get the box in the corner and
head back to Lolotte's place.

Quest Five:  Genesta's Talisman

Seems to me you've been swindled! (What did you expect?)  You're
reward is marriage to that slightly green hunk Edgar.  You're
basically thrilled to pieces.  After you get thrown in your room, wait
until edgar shows with the rose for you.  Take the rose and look at it
carefully.  Ah!  A key!  Unlock the door and carefully walk down the
stairs.  Be sure to be quiet and stay as far away as possible from
Lolotte's goons so you don't wake them.  Well, before you can make any
progress, you need your posessions back.  Head east toward the dining
room and go through the upper right door, don't wake the monkey man!
Open the closet in the upper right hand corner and take your stuff
then leave the room.

Now head through the lower right door, go east again and climb up
those stairs.  Keep going upstairs to Lolotte's room.  Unlock her door
and sneak in.  Well, there's the talisman you need for Genesta but how
to get it?  Wait!  Don't grab it!  You'll surely get zapped!  (believe
me I tried)  Well, let's give her a shot of love with Cupid's arrow.
Doesn't seem that did much for her but it certainly got rid of one
more idiot in the world.  Get the talisman and go down one flight of
stairs.  Go east from here.  Well, it seems you are now the goons
heroine!

Open the door to the north and go inside.  Get the chicken and
Pandora's box and leave the castle.  After you get out here walk into
the stable and free the unicorn and walk down the mountain.  Don't
forget to save!  You don't want to kill yourself by walking off the
edge of the path now!

When you get to the bottom, head back to the crypt and put Pandora's
box back, close the door and lock it, sealing it in forever.

Now all that's left is to save Genesta and return to your father!  Go
back to the fisherman's pier and swim west to the island.  Go up to
Genesta's room and give her the talisman.  After your teleported
outside, Genesta will take back her chicken giving your score a total
of 230 points.  Congratulations!  All you have to do now is watch the
ending sequence!
